Welcome.

My Name is Sydney Spaulding

I am a birth doula in Columbus, Ohio and believe expecting parents should feel empowered and confident throughout pregnancy, during birth and postpartum. Childbirth should bring out your highest self and you should feel informed and optimistic throughout your journey! I was called to birthwork for this reason. You can’t know how magical this time in your life can be until you set out to do so.

Know that you are in the right place.

I act as the birthing person’s advocate, guide, and companion through what could prove to be the most important time of their life. I believe this work is incredibly important as birth has been increasingly medicalized in the U.S.. I also emphasize the importance of trauma-informed care, both physically and emotionally because I believe our bodies hold on to both positive and negative energy throughout our lives which need to be recognized.

My approach to birthwork is wholly based on what the birthing person wants from their experience. I believe that the birthing person shoud be informed and in control throughout their whole pregnancy, into childbirth and beyond.

Every birthing person deserves to be treated with care and to feel understood on their journey to parenthood. Support comes in different forms during this period and looks different for each parent-to-be. I offer emotional, physical and informational support to my clients. I help simplify lives during a time when there is an overwhelming amount of information available and being given to the parents-to-be.

Did you know:

  • Research has shown that people giving birth with continuous support (such as a doula) experience a decrease of risk for a cesarian delivery of about 39% - 50%

  • The chances of a low 5-minute APGAR Score are decreased by about 38% when a birth doula is present

  • Studies have shown that the rate of positive birthing experiences reported with continuous support is about 31% higher than those without.

  • Birthing people who chose to have a doula request epidurals about 60% less than those without that support.

  • During birth, the doula’s presence and work with the birthing person leads to the production of more natural oxytocin, which means less medical inervention with synthetic hormone-like substances, letting the body do what it was designed to do during childbirth. This tends to make the experience more pleasurable and comfortable.
